Deb Bailey: So glad to meet you Ruth! How did you get started as an entrepreneur?

Ruth Booker: My mom saw an advertisement for Michael's in which clay pots were on sale.  She came up with the idea of painting and designing the clay pots and putting silk flowers in them.  We continued to add other products such as tote bags and crocheted hats and scarves.


Deb: That's terrific. Sounds like you offer a lot of nice gifts items. So, who are your ideal customers?

Ruth: My ideal customers are people who appreciate the value of handmade crafts.


Deb: Tell me about your products. What other items do you sell?

Ruth: Designed silk floral pots, crocheted hats and scarves.


Deb: What’s your vision for your business?

Ruth: My vision is to spread hope and joy though her crafts, and encourage other youth to start their own businesses.


Deb: You certainly have big plans for your business! Any words of advice for other young entrepreneurs?

Ruth: Don't listen to anyone who tells you to stop what you like doing. Follow your heart and pursue your passion.

Author Q&A: Who Says It's a Man's World?

Emily Bennington is the author of, Who Says It's a Man's World: The Girls' Guide to Corporate Domination. She's led training programs for numerous Fortune 500 companies and has been featured in business press ranging from CNN, ABC, and Fox to the Wall Street Journal, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan. She is also a contributing writer for Monster.com and a featured blogger for Forbes Woman.

Emily is stopping by the Secrets of Success blog today to discuss her new book.

Deb Bailey: Love the title of your book! What prompted you to write it?

Emily Bennington: Well, I wrote a book for college students on how to transition into the workforce that basically showed them how to avoid rookie landmines on the job. As part of that process, I realized one of the biggest mistakes I made at the beginning of my career was thinking "executive" meant cold and corporate. It was almost like putting on a suit of armor each morning - and it totally backfired on me.

I was perceived as stiff and untouchable which is so far from who I am and severely impacted my relationships with coworkers. As I've been traveling around the country speaking to various organizations and business groups, I meet a lot of women who I can tell are also wearing the armor - and its weighing them down too. I wanted to write a book that told them how to break free and build their career from a new foundation - one that's as focused on WHO they are as it is on WHAT they do.

Deb: What's your book about? 

Emily: If I could sum up the book in one sentence it's this: "You must be a magnificent woman first to have a magnificent career." I think a lot of us approach this process backwards in that we look to the title to make us who we are. This book flips that thinking on its head.


Deb: So, who do you think will benefit most from reading it?

Emily: Who Says It's a Man's World is for women who want a fulfilling career - and a fulfilling life. I wrote it for the countless women I've met over the years who are ambitious and want to take over the world, but just aren't as successful - yet - as they'd like to be. They have been bombarded with information, but what they really need are ANSWERS. They don't want the "why" - they need the HOW and this book provides it for them in the form of very specific action steps to accelerate their careers.


Deb: You know, there are so many career books out there. What makes your book different? 

Emily: The core message of Who Says It's a Man's World is to focus more on virtues - that is, WHO you want to be - and less on goals, i.e. what you want to do. This approach - anchored in mindfulness - is very different from most business books that are honed in on what I call "checking boxes." While I encourage readers to have goals, I remind them that tomorrow's success only comes from being present in the work of today.


Deb: When they've finished your book, what would like your readers to come away with? 

Emily: I want readers to ditch the white-knuckle grip on "goals" and get clear on who they want to be as people. Because when you're approaching your work and your career from  THAT place, you'll not only kill it every single day, but you'll enjoy the journey too.


Deb: As you know, this is a blog for women entrepreneurs. What's the best advice you could give to a woman entrepreneur who is uncertain of her next steps? 

Emily: Get very, very clear on your revenue stream and keep those projects front and center always. I know that sounds simple, but I struggled with it for a long time. I spent the first two years of my business putting out career content because that's what I loved to do, but I had nothing to "sell" apart from my book. And then I would sit around wondering why I wasn't making any money. That was dumb.


Deb: What inspires you to do the work you do? 

Emily: Thank you notes from readers. Last year I took down my vision board and replaced it with a cork board where I pin the emails and letters I receive. This process took the focus entirely off "What do I want to get" and put it on "How am I serving?"  That felt much better.

Search Marketing Essentials: How to be Found in Search Engines

You've made the decision to take the plunge and create your own business. While this may have seemed like a very difficult dream to achieve 10 years ago, in today's digital world it is something that is almost simple to do, although getting the business up and running is just the start.

Search marketing basics
To put it simply, search marketing is the art and science of making sure potential customers find your business in search engines when doing searches for specific keywords.

10 to 15 years ago, achieving this was as simple as having the keywords you wanted your business to appear for mentioned as many times as possible across your website. But with web users and search engines becoming savvier every day, the rules have changed and search marketing is now a much more complicated affair.

Activities to consider
Ensuring your business is found in search engines in 2013 is very often a juggling act between several specific activities.

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation
SEO is the work you can do on your website to ensure it is optimised with relevant keywords for your business. There are a multitude of elements that can be optimised on a website including:

  • Page titles and descriptions
  • Content
  • Internal links
  • Page names and URLs

The key here is to optimise for keywords that your potential customers would be searching for and not necessarily the ones you think are good, so doing some keyword research in the beginning is crucial.

It is also always good to remember that your business and website are here to serve customers and not only to get good rankings in Google. You therefore need to find the right balance in your optimisation for search engine and user friendliness.

In addition to work you can do on your website, search engines now also take the number of websites linking to yours into account when establishing their rankings.

While the number of links to your site is important, the quality of these links matters even more, so finding good sites to link to yours should be a priority. There are a number of techniques that can be used to do link building:

  • Directory listings - register your website on high quality directories or review sites
  • Social bookmarking - use sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Delicious or Pinterest to bookmark your own pages and encourage your visitors to do it too
  • Content syndication - producing good content is a great way to generate links to your website, but make sure you syndicate/share this content across the web to ensure users find it

Paid search
Paid search, also known as PPC, pay per click or sponsored advertising is something you should consider for your business if you have budgets available.

Google for example uses an advertising programme called Adwords where businesses basically bid on specific keywords to have their ads displayed when these keywords are searched for by users. Each time your ad is clicked, Google will charge you a fee. While this can get expensive if there is a lot of competition in your market, it is a great way to promote your business quickly and efficiently as you have total control of the bids, the ads or the amount you spend.

Social media
Creating and managing social accounts for your business will not only enable you to share content, but it'll also be a great way to engage with customers and raise brand awareness and authority. Google and other search engines are starting to take social signals and activities into account for rankings, so being social is now becoming a necessity.

Here are some of the social networking sites you should consider:
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google +
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • Youtube

Be strategic
Search marketing is now much more complex than it ever was and if you're just getting started with it, remember that integrating the different activities into a structured digital marketing strategy will help you get the best results. Make sure that you have clear objectives for your business as this will ensure you focus your resources and get the most out of your work.

How to Unhook from the Future

Friedman, which really simplifies the concept of living in the present moment, and how the practice of that will, for the boy in the story, eliminate fear and worry.

I wanted to explore that as it pertains to your business, with a slightly different slant. I wonder if you, like so many of my clients, and myself as well from time to time, are so hooked into the future that we're missing the NOW and not fully enjoying the journey?

So how do we unhook from it to allow what we truly want to come to pass without always feeling like we're striving for it?

Here are 5 ideas:

1. Let go of the goals that take you away from the present.

Let me say first that you can have everything you want - and there's no judgement here on what those things are.

That being said, do you want a mansion, to be the #1 speaker in your market, to be the one with the biggest email list in your market, to be a New York Times bestselling author, to make a million dollars?

There's nothing wrong with any of those lofty (and completely attainable) goals.

And, what happens is when we're so focused on the sexy dream we tend to get ourselves so riled up about getting there that we miss all the amazing stuff happening NOW.

What I've noticed is that people get impatient, sad, frustrated, and even angry when they're so focused on the future goal that the present seems uninteresting at best, despairing at worst.

The antidote? See #2.

2. Polish the present

I want to encourage you to stop striving so hard and thrive in your present.

What I mean is that if you make what you already have better, and polish what's already good and working, you uplevel your life without expending that energy on something that doesn't exist yet.

Yes, it's about appreciating what's already good and right in your world and in your business AND it's about how you can make what's already there fulfill you even more.

It's true that if you make the most of what you already have, you'll get more and better of it with a lot less effort on your part.

3. Don't plan so much

I'm all about having the big picture plan down to the day-to-day details, and yet I know that most of the time, the plan changes.

One of the reasons we - as business owners - plan so much is because it gives us a sense of control and it helps to alleviate the fears and doubts we have about knowing what we're doing.

So have the plan and be willing to be flexible with it. Let it be a guide but not the only way. If you get wrapped up in THE PLAN you'll actually hold yourself and your business back from being able to adapt quickly when things change - and they always do.

Assess if you spend more time planning than doing - and if you do, stop right now. And if you tend to fly by the seat of your pants more often than not, you might want a lightly-built framework around you to give you some sense of stability.

4. Get out of the striver's club

Stop trying to acquire a better future with others who are striving. It's just too exhausting. I'm not saying to surround yourself with lazy folks, but to get out of the overdrive club if you want to relax into a currently compelling present instead of an exhausting still 'out there somewhere' future.

5. Get off the 'if/when' rollercoaster

I admit this is a pet peeve of mine. Not from people who are decisive, but from people who use it as an excuse to not be happy now. When you make 'if/when' statements, you're living in the future. Dreaming and visioning is one thing; otherwise it's a holding pattern for you but even worse, you're not enjoying where you're at right now!

Now take and implement these five ideas to unhook from the future so you can enjoy the present.

Stop Chasing Your Dreams

As a part of this RADICAL community, there's no doubt you have some goals, aspirations and dreams that you want to bring to reality. I feel the same way. I have worked for years "chasing dreams" "pursuing goals" and "running for the prize".

Well, I have to tell you, while chasing, pursuing and running got me real results - it's also created moments of fatigue and tiredness!

Have you ever felt that way? That you were doing, doing, doing, and while you were making progress, you were wearing yourself out - becoming exhausted?

The definition of the word chase is to: Pursue in order to catch or catch up with.

By chasing our dreams, we've put our success into the future, ahead of us - trying desperately to catch up with them so we can feel accomplished. This process has the ability to make us feel lacking in where we are in our lives or business right now! No wonder we're exhausted - we're expending our energy working to get something in the future while living in a current state of wanting, needing and believing that something is missing in the present.

This year, I've committed to have my own RADICAL Revolution - to look at each area of my business and life and focus on what do I need to stop doing and what do I need to start doing to create more of what I want and less of what I don't want.

Last week, I spent time with four amazing coaches and women CEOs sharing and learning from one another and I realized that chasing, pursing and running, positions me behind my goals, behind my "prizes" and behind my dreams. So I decided to stop chasing the dream and start BEING the dream.

What does that mean?

It's taking a step back and becoming very deliberate and intentional about what you do by asking yourself: What does being in my dream today look like?

Dream of being an entrepreneur? What can you do today to be that? Maybe it's research, making calls, setting up a meetings or working on business plan.

Dream of losing weight and a healthy lifestyle? What can you do today to be that? Get enough sleep? Make a different food choice? Go for a walk?

Dream of a promotion at work? How would you treat your staff, team, coworkers or boss if were in that role today? How should you "show up" and "engage" at work differently today?

Dream of a stronger relationship with your significant other? How can you communicate with them today? How can you treat them today? What can you do to strengthen it today - even by just a little?

Dream of having more money? How can you better budget today? How can you make wiser financial decisions today?

Chasing the dream and being the dream is really about making a small shift in the way we act, what we do and who we be (I don't think that's proper English!) on a daily basis so that we don't see our goals as a far off opportunity, but as something we can experience to a certain degree each and every day.
