3 Things You Can Do RIGHT NOW To Be More Attractive to Prospects

Finding new prospects for your business is similar to dating. At the first encounter there is a level of attraction that causes a person to want to get know more about the individual who has caught their attention. After learning more about this attention grabbing person, a decision is made as to whether or not it is even worth pursuing a deeper relationship.

Your prospective clients are looking for solutions to their problems. Are you making sure that you are presenting your solutions in a way that not only attracts them to your offerings, but also lets them know that you are the BEST option for them?

Here are 3 things that you can do right now to be more attractive to your prospects.

1. Have a crystal-clear, super-defined picture of your target market and ideal client

It's impossible to attract the right kind of clients if you aren't exactly sure who your ideal client is. Get as specific as possible about your market and you'll find two great benefits:

  •     You'll only work with clients you like working with.
  •     Your ideal clients are more likely to say yes to working with you because you cater to their needs so well.

Remember, this is for the purpose of focusing your marketing efforts! It's not about leaving anyone out. Once you meet your goals with a specific target market, you can always expand your efforts to another group.

Once you identify your target market, you'll want to narrow that even further and identify who is your ideal client within that target market. Determine that person's demographic factors (like age, sex, marital status, etc.) as well as their psychographic profile. Psychographics deal more with the attitudes, values, lifestyles, and opinions of your ideal prospect. Psychographics give you a much deeper picture of what makes them tick.

Really take the time to brainstorm and list both the demographics and psychographics of your ideal client so you can speak directly to their needs in your marketing materials.

2. Stand out from the crowd

Objectively assess your business and consider what parts of it are unique. Then, position those elements at the front of your business.

This isn't about being vastly different from your colleagues and competitors. This is about being more YOU!

Tell your story. Share the experiences you've had that led you to offering your products and services. Show them the results you've created with other clients who are facing the same challenges they are. Let them see your personality, excitement and commitment to helping them be successful.

Potential clients are always looking for that special something about a business that sets it apart from others. Your prospects have their choice between you and your competitors. Show them that you're not the average business and why. You will be sure to win them over.

3. Stop trying to be all things to everyone

Contrary to what many small business owners believe, trying to provide everything to everyone is a really bad move.

You simply cannot focus your energies when you do that and your business is sure to suffer because of it. Get very specific about the kinds of products and services (aka solutions) you want to provide and market them. The result will likely be that prospects will consider you a specialist and that's always good.

Once you have your target market and unique positioning, this part becomes a whole lot easier.

Smart people who are on the dating scene already know what type of person they are attracted to. They have identified the qualities that are important to making a great match. They don't want to date just "anybody."

As a business owner, you will be more attractive to prospects if they understand that you are the best person who can help them to solve their problems. They will know that you are a perfect match because you are able to demonstrate that they need to look no further.

How so? Because of your focused marketing efforts, they recognize themselves as a person in your target market, they see how you stand out from the crowd of other service providers and they know that you are in business to serve people "just like them!"

Your Action Plan For The Week:
  •     Look at your current list of clients. Which ones are you excited about working with?
  •     Write down how you found those ideal clients. Are they in the same target market?
  •     Based on your analysis, choose one specific target market where you will focus your marketing efforts.
  •     Write down your story as to why and how you launched your business. Start using pieces of your story in your marketing.
  •     Research 3 places where your target market is hanging out (online or offline), start showing up there and talk about the problems you solve.

7 Steps for Creating the Life YOU Want

We all aspire to do, be and have great things. Yet most of us simply aren't creating the results we want. We complain that we don't have enough money, romance, success or joy in our lives.

We point fingers and blame outside problems that "happen" to us and make life more difficult. But what we need to understand and keep at the forefront of our minds is that greatness exists in all of us. It is simply up to us to pull it out of ourselves. Regardless of personal circumstances, economic climates, and access to resources, it helps to maintain faith in the fact we each are more powerful than we think.

We all have the ability to create the life we want. We just need to learn how to do it. Is there an exact "formula"? No, but there are certain common features that successful people exhibit and that anyone can practice. They are what can jumpstart your success and attract what you want in life. You'd be hard pressed to find any high achiever who doesn't live by the following 7 tips:

1. Take No Less than 100% Responsibility for Your Life


One of the greatest myths that is pervasive in our culture today is that you are entitled to a great life and that somehow, somewhere, someone is responsible for filling our lives with continual happiness, exciting career options, nurturing family time and blissful personal relationships simply because we exist. But the real truth is that there is only one person responsible for the quality of the life you live. That person is you.

Everything about you is a result of your doing or not doing. Income. Debt. Relationships. Health. Fitness level. Attitudes and behaviors. That person who reflects back at you in the mirror is the chief conductor in your life. Say hello!

I think everyone knows this in their hearts, but the mind can play games, tricking plenty of people into thinking external factors are the source of failure, disappointment, and unhappiness. But the truth of the matter is that external factors don't determine how you live. You are in complete control of the quality of your life.

Successful people take full responsibility for the thoughts they think, the images they visualize, and the actions they take. They don't waste their time and energy blaming and complaining. They evaluate their experiences and decide if they need to change them or not. They face the uncomfortable and take risks in order to create the life they want to live.

2. Be Clear Why You're Here

I believe each of us is born with a life purpose. Identifying, acknowledging and honoring this purpose is perhaps the most important action successful people take. They take the time to understand what they're here to do, and then they pursue that with passion and enthusiasm.

If you don't know what you're supposed to be doing, then just tune in to the signals around you. Looking toward others for help and guidance is helpful, but don't forget to stay tuned in to yourself—your behavior, attitude, likes and dislikes, and life experiences. Identify what's working and what isn't. If you need to, write it all down. You might be surprised by what you discover.

3. Decide What You Want

It sounds so simple, but here's the problem: I see plenty of people who are overly-busy yet who feel unsatisfied and unfulfilled. They are physically tired, spiritually drained, and far from where they'd like to be—as if they've been running on a treadmill going nowhere fast. Why? Because they haven't clearly mapped out what they want and then taken the steps to get there. Rather than identifying specific goals, milestones, and dreams (and I'm talking BIG dreams and goals here), they go through the motions day in and day out tackling unimportant tasks. They end up...you guessed it...going in circles and wasting lots of energy. In the meanwhile, they grow increasingly uninspired and out of touch with their authentic selves. This, of course, sets anyone up to living a life out of balance.

One of the main reasons why most people don't get what they want is they haven't decided what they want. They haven't defined their desires in clear and compelling detail. What does success look like to you? Not everybody's definition of success is the same, nor should it be.

Don't let your inner devil's advocate (or that incessant but unimportant To Do list) inhibit you from dreaming big. As soon as you commit to a big dream and really go after it, your subconscious creative mind will come up with big ideas to make it happen. You'll start attracting the people, resources, and opportunities you need into your life to make your dream come true. Big dreams not only inspire you, but they also compel others to want to play big, too.

4. Believe It Is Possible

Scientists used to believe that humans responded to information flowing into the brain from the outside world. But today, they're learning that instead we respond to what the brain, based on previous experience, expects to happen next. In fact, the mind is such a powerful instrument; it can deliver literally everything you want. But you have to believe that what you want is possible.

As you commit to believing in yourself, also make a commitment to toning down the complaint department. Look at what you are complaining about. I'm fat. I'm tired. I can't get out of debt. I won't ever get a better job. I can't stand the relationship I have with my father. I'll never find a soulmate in life. Really examine your complaints. More than likely you can do something about them. They are not about other people, other things, or other events. They are about YOU.

5. Believe in Yourself

If you are going to be successful in creating the life of your dreams, you have to believe that you are capable of making it happen. Whether you call it self-esteem, self-confidence or self-assurance, it is a deep-seated belief that you have what it takes; the abilities, inner resources, talents and skills to create your desired results.

Have unwavering faith in yourself, for good and bad. Make the decision to believe that you create all your experiences. You will experience successes thanks to you, and you will experience pain, struggle, and strife thanks to you. Sounds a little strange, but accepting this level of responsibility is uniquely empowering. It means you can do, change, and be anything. Stumbling blocks become just that—little hills to hop over.

6. Become an Inverse Paranoid

This one is straightforward: Imagine how much easier it would be to succeed in life if you were constantly expecting the world to support you and bring you opportunity. Successful people do just that.

7. Unleash the Power of Goal Setting

Experts on the science of success know the brain is a goal-seeking organism. Whatever goal you give to your subconscious mind, it will work day and night to achieve. To engage you subconscious mind, a goal has to be measurable. When there aren't any criteria for measurement, it is simply something you want, a wish, a preference, or a good idea.

Sometimes we need to make just one initial goal to get started, and that's okay. At least it comes with a few actions to achieve. A first step simply can be making an immediate change in a single area in your life. Are you unhappy about something that is happening right now? Make requests that will make it more desirable to you, or take the steps to change it yourself. Making a change might be uncomfortable and overwhelming for you. It might mean you have to put in more time, money, and effort. It might mean that someone gets upset about it, or makes you feel bad about your decision. It might be difficult to change or leave a situation, but staying put is your choice so why continue to complain? You can either do something about it or not. It is your choice and you have responsibility for your choices.

Bear in mind that you have to be willing to change your behavior if you want a different outcome. You have to be willing to take the risks necessary to get what you want. If you've already taken an initial step in the right direction, now's the time to plan more steps to keep moving you forward faster.

Isn't it a great relief to know that you can make your life what you want it to be? Isn't it wonderful that your successes do not depend on someone else?

So if you need just one thing to do different today than you did yesterday, make it this: Commit to taking 100% responsibility for every aspect of your life. Decide to make changes, one step at a time. Once you start the process you'll discover it is much easier to get what you want by taking control of your thoughts, your visualizations, and your actions!

How to Make Your Resume Stand Out

If you're working as a contractor or consultant, you'll probably need a resume at some point. Instead of waiting until you need it, create one now and have it ready to share. Here are some important tips you can apply to ensure your resume is polished and professional.

From my book, “Secrets of a Great Resume:”


Your resume should only include your strongest accomplishments. Though it’s tempting to add all the details about every client, position or internship you’ve had, your resume is only a starting point. Use it to get your foot in the door so that you can get a meeting. Once you have an opportunity to speak with the decision maker, you can go into more detail.

Since you have to catch the attention of the reader right away, stay away from passive-sounding words when describing your accomplishments and responsibilities. Passive sentences are indirect and don’t make much of an impression. Look at this example of a passive sentence: “Participated on product development team.” Compare that with this example of an active sentence: “Created scripts and tested the new product.”

In addition to using active words and sentences in your descriptions, you also have to show results. Which description would appeal to you as a hiring manager? “Arranged new product development meetings,” or “Facilitated meetings for new product development team which led to cost savings due to reduced miscommunication between departments.”

If you’re just starting out or looking for assignments in a different industry than you have experience in, playing up your skills is very important. You may not have direct experience in the area you’re looking to get into, but you can play up the skills you already have. Pick accomplishments that show that you are versatile and can think out of the box. Play up training and learning experiences to show that you are proactive and have leadership abilities.

No matter how much experience you have, the person reading your resume should see right away that you can perform the duties the position requires. If you present yourself to your best advantage, you’ll have a better chance of being hired for the assignment.

Simplify: A Few Easy Tips

You can try doing Cat Yoga to simplify your business and bring some inner peace or you can just do a couple of these tips:

  •     Three-box decluttering. Declutter a room, drawer, shelf, desk. Use three boxes to sort. Quickly go through each shelf or drawer or flat surface at once, putting things into three separate boxes: Trash, Donate, Maybe.
  •     Create a no-distractions zone. This is great for when you want to do some focused work — which is just about every day for most of us. Create a zone with no distractions — no phones, no email, no co-workers or kids or spouses, nothing on the walls, no IM or Twitter, no web surfing. Just the tools you need and nothing else. Schedule time for this distraction-free zone. No distractions within that block of time.
  •     Create a short-list. This is big-picture simplifying. If you’re having a hard time getting your life to something truly simple, create a short list of things you love doing most. This should be 4-5 things. assessment priced reasonably so it’s an ‘easy yes’.
  •     Go schedule-less. This works well if you’ve been over-packing your schedule. Set a policy that you won’t schedule any appointments. If you need to meet with someone, call them and meet.
  •     Go media free. If your life is filled with information overload, and you find little time to do the things you love to do, eliminate media, at least temporarily. This includes cable TV, DVDs, newspapers and magazines.
  •     Limit yourself to one project. How many projects are you juggling right now? If there are too many, you might be limiting your effectiveness. Focus on one project right now, and put the others on the back-burner. Try to get that one project done as quickly as possible, and then work on the next one.
  •     Only wear a few colors. This means that it’s very easy to match clothes, and you don’t need a lot of clothes. You’ll have other colors you love to wear — build your wardrobe around them. It keeps things nice and simple.
  •     One in, two out. When you bring something into your house, you have to get rid of two things. The normal rule is one in, one out, but somehow that never seems to work — things still accumulate. Instead, get rid of two things and things will stay simple.
  •     Staunch your information flow. Cut back on the amount of information coming into your life. Unsubscribe to mailing lists, ask people to stop sending you joke or chain emails (or block them from your inbox), automatically filter things you don’t really need to read, pre-empt common questions with an FAQ. Do you read a lot of blog feeds? Unsubscribe to those that don’t give you value. Do you read a lot of news? Pick one news source instead of five.
  •     Ask for help. If you’re stuck or just avoiding something, ask for help. Trade tasks with a neighbor or colleague – or evaluate if there’s another way to get it done.

Is It a Marketing Problem or Is Your Desperation Showing?

There are people who think that your success is all about your marketing.

These people will tell you that if you launched a campaign that didn’t work, then you should examine the offer, your list, your click-throughs, your subject lines, your headlines, your copy and your price points.  They will tell you, “It’s a marketing problem.”

Then there’s the other camp.

These people will tell you it’s all about your energy. That marketing is manipulative, and that you just need to get your spirit into alignment and not worry so much about marketing to get clients or customers. Just do the mindset work – the soul work – and you’ll be totally fine. The universe will then send you the customers.

I think real success is when you plant yourself in both camps.

Yes, learn how to market.

In the process, you will learn how to communicate and how to serve.   Plus, the results of any offer you make, any campaign you launch can be altered instantly by a single tweak, and it can astound you the difference one word or number can make in your results.  “Ah, it was a MARKETING problem! How interesting!”

On the other hand, no amount of tweaking, testing or tracking can fix bad juju.

And what I mean by bad juju is this:

“I am so desperately in need of your approval or your money or your power that I have come up with this campaign just so that I can get something from you… even if it’s just a comment, or a share.”

So yes, your energy matters too.

As a business owner, you are always working with your intention, and mindsets.  You always have an opportunity to clean it up. Your awareness is key.

However, if you learn marketing in an attempt to never have to manage your own motivations or energy?

Or if you try to stay all peaced-out and use your good energy as an excuse to not face the business stuff that has frightened you a bit?

Then you’ll have some ugly wake up calls someday.

That’s because having a business means you have to be able to market, to understand how you communicate, make offers, sell things, put your programs and packages together.

But you also have to learn how to spot where you aren’t clear, clean or aligned.  Where you are grasping out of desperation, rather than selling out of service. Don’t kid yourself. Both of these things are important.  And this is not about shaming yourself for not having it all perfect.

It’s simply about being relentlessly aware of how you are growing your business and making money.  And this, in and of itself, is the best reward of all.

5 Simple Shortcuts to Creating GREAT Newsletter Content When You're Short On Time & Hate To Write

Since we launched the current version of the Smart Simple Marketing brand back in 2009, by far one of the most effective marketing strategies we've used has been our email newsletter.

We've sent it out every week since March 2010 and have never missed a single issue. Because of that, every single week we receive phone calls from prospective clients inquiring as to how we might work together to achieve their goals.

Sometimes they've only been subscribers for a few months. We've had prospective clients reach out after two years or more. But, whenever they are moved to reach out to us, they always say the same thing, "it's because you are consistent in reaching out to me with your newsletter."

Believe me, as systematized as we have things, getting our newsletter out the door is a team effort. But we have created a number of shortcuts along the way that make it easier and less time consuming. That one issue, time, seems to be the biggest obstacle that holds people back.

I can't tell you how many people have said to me, "Sydni, I don't know how you do your newsletter every week. I just don't have that kind of time!" I also hear this a lot: "I hate to write" or 'I don't know what to write about."

Here are five ways you can shortcut the process of creating content for your email newsletter:

    Repurpose any content you already have - Who said you had to write something original? Breathe new life into a PowerPoint presentation, an article written about you or your company. You could even use a testimonial from a client. Re-work it to address a current concern of your ideal client and get that newsletter out the door.

    Use someone else's content
- You can easily hire a writer to create custom content for you (from a website such as Elance) or you can use an article with someone else's permission. Getting their permission and giving them credit is key. Use a site like ezinearticles.com to find content on pretty much any subject. Reach out to the author to ask their permission and be sure to use the resource box (or bio) they have listed. Link back to their website in order to give credit where it is due.

    Record audio and have it transcribed - This is one of my favorite shortcuts because I personally don't enjoy writing. Use a voice recorder or a service like AudioAcrobat to record your thoughts. Download the MP3 and send it off to a service like The Admin Source to have it transcribed. Keep in mind, talking for 5-10 minutes can create plenty of content for multiple platforms and you don't have to type a single word!

    Record a quick video - Wil and I spent almost three weeks in Hawaii celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and shot this video on "4 Keys to A Lifestyle Focused Business" for the newsletter. There was no fancy equipment involved (we used my iPhone) and I simply talked about an issue that is highly relevant and interesting to our audience. You can do the same thing! (Even if you aren't on vacation and rockin' "island hair" like I was!)

    Create a list article - You know an awful lot about your area of expertise. Much of it you probably take for granted. Please stop assuming that "everyone" already knows what you know. I guarantee your audience would LOVE for you to share with them your best tips and nuggets of information.

    Take the Top 3/5/7/10, mistakes, must know, tips, etc., that you think your audience needs to know, add an entry paragraph, and a closing paragraph and voila! You have a great piece of content ready to share with an audience who is waiting to hear from you.

Creating great content on a regular basis is easier than you think. The key is to not over think it, focus on a specific topic that is of interest to the people you are sending it to and keep it simple. Pick ONE of the shortcuts I shared with you and set aside a small block of time to get your next newsletter out the door! You can remind your existing clients of other ways you can help them and engage new clients to invest in solutions they are already looking for!
