How to Attract Affluent Clients

by Ali Brown

Everyone wants to attract affluent clients for their business – why not sell to those who have the money to spend? But not everyone knows how to gain these clients successfully. Moving from a general clientele to a wealthier client base requires a shift in your mindset, but it's a shift that can pay off tremendously for you and your business. Here are a few basic tips on how to appeal to affluent customers.

Look the part and be confident. Before you approach affluent clients, you'll want to review all your marketing materials and website to ensure that it portrays you and your business as a high-caliber enterprise. No business cards on cheap, flimsy paper. No cheesy clip art. Put your best foot forward so you'll look and feel confident. That also means how you personally look and feel too! Is it time to update your wardrobe? The last thing you want when you're rubbing elbows with wealthy prospects is to appear needy or insecure, so don't gush or oversell yourself. And never show signs of intimidation. Even if that feeling creeps in on occasion, keep a brave face.

Build your network. Wealthy customers tend to buy from people they know or businesses that have been recommended to them. So, get out there and start planting the seed by attending charity dinners, golf tournaments, and the like. Chatting with people and being seen at these types of events will build your trust and credibility. Think of networking as a long-term investment, rather than a short-term project. You may not see results immediately, but it can pay off months or even years into the future.

Give them the VIP treatment. The kind of clients who are willing to pay top dollar are used to being treated extremely well. The Algonquin Hotel in New York City is legendary for noting each guests' preferences so the staff can make sure that the room is exactly to the guests' liking the next time they visit. Do your research so you can customize your interactions to that client. When you're talking to an affluent client, they should feel as if they're your first priority. They should never feel rushed to finish a transaction or pressured to sign on the dotted line. Instead, ask how you can meet their needs and listen for clues.

Make it about value, not about price. Wealthy customers don't check the price tag before they try on that gorgeous, hand-embroidered dress. Their eyes don't hover over the menu prices at that exclusive oceanfront restaurant. They buy or order want they want, because of the beauty, enjoyment, or other value it brings to their life. They have high standards, but appealing to their desire to save money or using the hard sell just won't work. Instead, demonstrate the value that your product or service offers. Create a narrative about the positive feelings it will create. Price should be secondary to the product, but once you start talking dollars and cents, a higher price point can actually be attractive because it reinforces the idea that yours is a higher quality product or service.

The best part: Once you've built relationships with clients of this caliber, you'll find that you're able to charge more and work less because you have fewer client relationships to manage. Follow these tips and you'll be well on your way.

How To Uncover The Results That Make Your Clients Want To Buy From You

by Elizabeth Genco Purvis

If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: "Don't talk about what you do, talk about the benefits and results your clients get." And if you're like many heart-based business owners and transformation professionals I know, hearing this time-tested marketing truth probably makes you roll your eyes a little.

After all, when you're working on such a deep level, transformation can be hard to put into words. Even on the surface, some of what we do is, well, flat-out fuzzy and hard to describe. Besides, we can't promise results anyway, right?

You can come up with a zillion reasons why you can't "bottom line" what you do for your clients, but you can't change the fundamental human truth behind the whole benefits-not-features thing: your clients don't buy "stuff," they buy what that stuff will do for them - specifically, the emotions they will experience as a result of getting what they want.

"You can't fight City Hall," as the saying goes. And if there's one thing I know for sure, it's that you can't fight human psychology and win. Bottom line: if you can't clearly articulate the results of using your services, you won't sell very many of them.

So what's a heart-centered business owner to do? Here are 3 tips on how to uncover the results of your services so that your clients clearly see what they're really going to get when they work with you.

1. Make it physical. If your service feels "fuzzy" or feel-good, or if you struggle to describe the deep transformation you facilitate in your clients, it's time to get physical. All transformation has a physical manifestation, somewhere and somehow. How does your work "show up" for your clients in the physical world?

Let's say you're a healer who helps her clients dissolve the inner blocks that keep them stuck. Once those blocks are gone, what happens then? How will the removal of those blocks show up here on the physical plane? They might be able to finally find a relationship, or get a higher-paying job, or more and better clients. (Note that this is a general, unfocused example. If you do this kind of work, you'll want to get really specific on what areas of life and specific problems you focus on.)

2. Don't do all the work! When it comes to results and outcomes, your clients know a thing or two - namely, they know what they WANT. Most heart-centered "change agents" can create all kinds of transformation. What outcomes are your clients really looking for? It's for them to say, and for you to find out - through connection, surveys, and especially in your potential client conversations.

3. What's the impact? When clients work with you, what's the real impact of your work? How does it ripple out to every aspect of their lives? Start with just one outcome they could get. How does getting that outcome impact their relationships, home life, spiritual life, and finances? (And yes, your work impacts their finances, even if you can't see it directly right now.)

"But Elizabeth, I can't promise results!" If I had a nickel for every time I've heard this from spirited entrepreneurs, I'd, well... I'd have a heck of a lot of nickels. So if the thought of "promising results" stops you cold, you're not alone. But guess what?

There isn't a single transformation professional on the planet who can "promise results." Why? Because your clients have to show up and do their work! It's not about promises you can't keep, it's about possibility. And no matter what, the client has to do their part. (Yep, this applies to healers, such as acupuncturists and energy workers, who are extra concerned about this issue because of liability.)

When you say things like "I can't promise results," you're really taking on a responsibility which lies with your clients... which isn't cool, or healthy boundaries, or even possible. Be them positive or negative, your clients own their outcomes. Instead, focus on holding the space of possibility of the results your clients can step into when they make new choices.

(Did you catch the energy difference between "I can't do that" and "holding the space of possibility"? My coach's request to you: check out how each of those feels in your body. Which would you rather experience? Whichever it is, you can bet your clients are feeling it too!)

Marching to the Beat of Your Own Drum

By Christine Kloser

For most of my life I’ve been conditioned to march to the beat of a familiar drum… the drum that says, “fall into line, don’t break the mold, do what everyone else is doing, follow the pack, don’t make waves, fit in with the crowd, etc.” The beat of this drum had become so familiar to me that I didn’t even notice it was beating in the background of my life.

In all honesty, that familiar beat had been running my life. Yes, I stepped out of the usual nine-to-five corporate mold that society teaches us is what success looks like. But, I stepped into an entrepreneurial mold that had a similar beat… “Do what everyone else is doing.” And, so I did – for several years – until I realized that I didn’t want to be marching to the beat of that drum anymore.

And, so the quest began to march to the beat of my own drum… to do the deep inner work to discover what is true and right for me. I have made much progress on my quest. I’ve discovered so much more certainty within myself, while also feeling less certainty on the external level. The beauty is that I’m finding comfort in the “I don’t know.” Because what I DO know, is that I’m beginning to march to the beat of my own drum. And, with certainty like that, it makes any external uncertainty a non-issue.

So, what does it take to march to the beat of your own drum?

Opening Your Eyes
First, you’ve got to open your eyes to the truth of what is happening within you and around you. You must raise your level of consciousness and become keenly aware of your own thoughts, feelings, motivations, etc. It’s only when you begin to open your eyes to the truth (and allow yourself to see it and feel it) that you can begin to shift what isn’t working. For many years I had an inner inkling that something wasn’t quite right with a part of my business. And, it wasn’t until I looked into those dark corners that I could see for the first time what I wanted to shift, how I wanted to shift and what had been holding me back from a life of total freedom. And, it had nothing to do with my business, but everything to do with ME!

So, step one is to take a look and see if there’s anything you’ve been staying blind to that it’s time for you to see.

Please, please, please… have compassion for yourself on this journey. I used to think that every time I saw something unpleasant about myself, my life or my business that I was “supposed” to use it to beat myself up. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you open your eyes and begin to see things… you must learn to have compassion for yourself as you become more conscious and fr*ee yourself at a deeper level. Marching to the beat of your own drum requires that you LOVE yourself forward (that’s a fabulous phrase I got from my spiritual teacher), not that you beat yourself up. So, as you do the work to find YOUR unique rhythm, have compassion for yourself and who you have been up until now. You have always only done the best you could with what you knew at the time.

So, step two is to allow yourself to see something that isn’t working for you and have compassion for yourself as you see it.

I love the word commitment! I learned many years ago, at the very first personal development program I attended in 1995, that commitment equals freedom! At first, I thought the trainer was crazy, but the more I thought about it the more I saw the truth in this. When you are totally committed to something (in this case, your authentic expression in the world) you don’t have any other options. Your choices of being “less than your best authentic self” get taken away. And, that’s a good thing! Why would you want to be committed to anything less than pursuing your authentic expression in the world 100%?! It makes no sense. So, if you’re going to walk on this journey of marching to the beat of your own drum… COMMIT to it! And, let it take you where you’re meant to go.

So, step three is to make a commitment to yourself right now that you will do whatever it takes to release the “should’s” from your life and learn to march to the beat of your own drum!

Taking That Leap of Faith

by Jackie Lapin

Most of us live in fear of taking that big, bold step into the unknown. How do you give up the known for the unknown, for insecurity, uncertainty and who knows what else? Clearly for a lot of people, it's terrifying.

But consider the possible upside. Your life could be better - certainly no worse? You could make more money, have more love and see your dreams realized! You could be leaving behind insurmountable baggage and traveling a new pristine path filled with joy, exciting adventures, satisfying new experiences and wonderful new people! Most of all, if you have been resisting that inner voice that speaks from your heart, and you make this new commitment, you will be living the life you were intended to live.

And here's the best part! When you take that first step into the future - even if you cannot see where you are headed - the Universe will open the next door for you. When you take the step after that, another new door opens. Do you remember movies where the heroes stop at a giant chasm and wonder how to get across? But once they take a step in faith, one step on the bridge after another magically appears until they are across the divide? That's how the Universe works. Make the commitment to change toward something positive and life-enhancing and the Universe will reveal the steps as you need them.

So how do you take that first step?

1. Breathe - Take a deep breath. Breathe out the stale complacent energy and breathe in fresh new energy. Do this ten times and feel yourself relax into it.

2. Meditate - Get quiet and then get clear on where you are headed. What it is you want to achieve through this change. Take all of your fear, imagine bundling it up in a leak-proof container and shipping it to the Center of the Earth, where it is consumed in molten lava. Then open yourself to the support that the Universe is sending you. Bask in that gracious support and let it fill you with optimism and joy.

3. Find Your Center, Ground, Empower Yourself - When you finish meditating, rise up and stand with your two feet wide apart, solidly planted. Ground yourself by seeing your feet as roots extending into the Earth. Feel rooted and stable, gaining strength and steadfastness. Notice how you are starting to feel empowered. You have support from the Universe, you have stability from the Earth, now feel your own empowerment growing, filling your entire body. Observe this empowerment growing in your heart! Feel this vibrant energy coursing through your system, and extending out through your aura or energy body. You are bursting with positive empowered energy.

4. Declare Your Faith - State your faith in the Universe to help guide you toward your highest good as you take this next all-important step. Know the Universe is carrying you along in its embrace, welcoming your commitment. Express your gratitude for this assistance and for the doors that are opening to ease you into your new life.

5. Discover Your Courage - Like the Lion in the Wizard of Oz, uncover your hidden well of courage and let it flow forth. You are a courageous person; you were born with the ability to stand in your truth. Remember that you are not alone on the journey; you have help!

6. Set Your Intention - Now that you are clear about your ultimate goal or objective, state your intention to the Universe clearly and succinctly, in visual detail and with the beautiful emotions of joy and wonder. Then write it, post it around your home, put it on a Vision Board or in a Vision whatever you need to do to create it as a physical living embodiment of your intention for success.

7. Act As If, Believe - Even if you are having doubts about the outcome of your new endeavor, Act As If it were to be a great success, and proceed with vigor under the assumption that it will. Put your belief in the next step, and then do it again with the one after.

8. Let Go of the How - Don't worry about all the details. Surely, you need to plan, prepare, and activate the right steps to create a successful endeavor. But you don't have to know every detail ahead. You've set the course and the Universe will take care of the rest. Be open to "course correction" by the Universe, so you can take advantage of each new opportunity.

9. Ask for Guidance - Just before you take your Leap of Faith, invite the Universe to direct you, counsel you and create a smooth pathway. Remember that you must be open to receive this. If "receiving" is not easy for you, here is where you must adjust your "antenna" so that you don't deflect the wisdom coming your way.

10. Take the Step - Now's the time! Quit that job, start a business, release an old relationship that doesn't serve you, sell the old house and buy a new one, move across the country, make a large investment in your self-growth, get married to the person you love - whatever it is, if you truly feel in your heart that this is something you passionately desire, than make the commitment and allow your glorious future to unfold before you!

Overcome Speaking Anxiety With The Transformation Conversation

by Janet Hilts

A sure way to reduce your speaking fears is to shift your focus. Set aside the questions that drive your discomfort.

You know the ones:

  • Can I really do this?

  • Will they like me?

  • What if I don't say this right?

Shift your focus to the transformation your service or product will create for your listener. This will be effective when you're talking with one person, a whole room full of folks, or hundreds of people on a teleseminar.

How It Works

Start by visualizing just one person (preferably your ideal client). Now picture them totally transformed by what you offer. Really imagine all the ways their life can be changed by your service or product. YOU know what that looks like and feels like. You've seen it with other people -- right? Can you feel that excitement? I'm grinning just writing about it! an

Now bring that energy and vision to your conversation and your own fear is just pushed aside. When you're fired up with that enthusiasm from knowing the possibilities, it's contagious. Your listeners could care less whether you "say it right" or not. They're caught up in your vision for them of what will be created with your service or product.

Underneath your enthusiasm, you're relaxed because now the conversation has nothing to do with your worries. You could actually have fun! AND now you'll be doing a better job of getting your best message across.

Bonus Tip

Do a dry run first. Take time to practice this on your own by following these steps:

  1. Define your ideal client. Write out a thorough description of a person who fits your definition of who you're the best match for.

  2. Make a list of every benefit your service or product can create for your ideal client.

  3. Go even further. Ask yourself what's the benefit resulting from each of those benefits.

  4. Now picture your ideal client experiencing those benefits.

When you shift your focus in this way, you'll be a much more effective speaker. You're relaxed so you can be creative, spontaneous and clear - really able to communicate what you want to.

Entrepreneurs Making a Difference

Faith and Ann were guests on "Women Entrepreneurs - The Secrets of Success" where they gave more details about their food drive project. Listen here to the archived show. Contact Faith or Ann if you'd like to get involved or make a donation.

Organizers: Homeless to Independence, Inc. - Executive Director, Ann Martin-Frey and Keepsakes by Faith, LLC -Owner, Faith Saunders.

Purpose: To mobilize New Jerseyians statewide to make a difference in their communities. There is a vast amount of need and this has significantly increased given our current economic situation. Our goal is to coordinate various community projects on a quarterly basis (at least for now) that members of the community can participate in.

Past Success: Winter Outerwear Drive (a Coat Drive) Goal was to collect at 200 coats that we would give to persons who are homeless, disabled and the working poor. Well 200 turned into over 2500 coats and counting. This was distributed to various individuals and agencies that provide services to the target group throughout NJ.

Future Plans: We are currently exploring various options for the remaining quarters. Some ideas includes a Mentoring Project for Teens and/or Undeserved individuals, a Clothing/Shoes Drive that would benefit Haiti and others in our communities who are in need. We will definitely do the Coat Drive in the 4th quarter of this year again.

Overwhelmed? How to Use Systems to Simplify Your Business

by Julie Barnes

You finally took the leap to start your business. Everything is going great, but you feel like you’re burning the candle at both ends. You're checking email, Twittering, updating your status on Facebook, answering the phone, all while finalizing your next marketing campaign. Wow! It’s astounding the amount of “to-do’s an entrepreneur can complete in one day. Sometimes it can seem that there should be 36 hours in the day instead of 24. That is where systems come in. Setting up systems for your business will simply you life and can increase your ability to get even more done in a day. Your business will run more effectively and efficiently.

Here is a list of basic system ideas:

•Policies and Procedures Manual
Even if you are a solo business owner, you will still need to write and develop a policies and procedures manual. Once you have written your manual you will also want to create a backup plan. Think about what will happen if you have an emergency that takes you away from your business. Whomever you put in charge will be able to grab the policies and procedures manual and move ahead with your business, until you’re able to return. Remember to keep your manual up-to-date as your business grows or changes.

E-mail can become overwhelming. With emails from clients, prospects, colleagues, newsletters, and family your e-mail box can quickly fill up. Not to mention that most of us feel the need to check e-mail whenever we see the “you got mail” notification. A good rule to follow is to check your e-mail morning, noon, and before you end the day. Some suggest checking morning and evening.

In David Allen’s book Getting Things Done he recommends the following:

*Handle any email that takes two-minutes or less immediately.
*Create two folders for any longer-than-two-minute-e-mails that you need to act on.
*Folder 1 – ACTION – This folder will hold those e-mails that you need to do something about.
*Folder 2 – WAITING FOR – This folder will hold e-mails that you are waiting to hear back on, waiting for more information, etc.
*Delete what you can, file what you want to keep, and complete any less-than-two-minute responses.

You will also need a great e-mail program to work with. Outlook is a great program and also Google mail better known as Gmail. With Gmail you can color code your e-mails, set filters and folders that will get you Über organized.

You will want to spend some time planning your phone procedures. While some business owners choose to answer all calls, if you are a service based business that bills task on time, then stopping and answering your calls will not be conducive to your bottom line. You will need to set up specific times to check voice mail and return calls. You may also want to schedule all calls with your clients, prospects, etc.

How to Turn Limp Affirmations Into Mantras for Success!

by Jack Canfield

To affirm something is simply to declare that it is true. So, creating and using affirmations should be a breeze, right?

Actually, the true art of the affirmation is both subtle and profound. Despite the popularity of this technique, some people use affirmations that are bland and perhaps even self-defeating.

When creating your affirmation, remember that even minor variations in wording can make a huge difference in the results you get. Since your words literally have the power to create your circumstances, invest a few minutes now to take your affirmation skills to a higher level.

Consider the following statement:

I will quit smoking with ease and joy, remembering the effects on my physical and mental health and preparing to live a longer life.

By using the guidelines found below, you can transform limp affirmations like that into mantras for manifesting a huge change in your life!

The following points are key:

1) Enter the “now”
Start your affirmation by entering the present tense. Take the condition you desire and declare it to be already true.

2) Be positive
Our sample affirmation keeps the focus on smoking—the condition that you do not want. Instead, shine a light on what you do want—to be smoke-free.

A related reminder: Our subconscious mind skips the word not. So, delete this word from your affirmations. “I am not afraid of public speaking” gives us the message that you are afraid. Use, “I feel at ease as I speak in public.”

3) Be concise
Shorter is better. Affirmations with fewer words are often easier to recall, especially in situations when you feel some stress. Rhyming makes your affirmations even more memorable. For example, “I am feeling alive at 185.”

4) Include action
Whenever possible, affirm yourself as a person who takes action. For example: “I am gratefully driving my new Porsche along an open highway.” Action engages the Law of Attraction, creating new results in our lives and opening us to further inspiration.

5.) Include a feeling word
Powerful affirmations include content and emotion. Content describes the specific outcome that you desire. Emotion gets to the heart of how you feel about that outcome. For a more potent affirmation, add both elements.

Consider this affirmation:

"I am supporting my children to fully come forward into the world."

The content of this statement is clear. Yet it lacks an emotional charge. Breathe life into this affirmation by adding an active expression of feeling:

"I am lovingly supporting my children and encourage them to fully express their unique talents and gifts."

You will know that you have a powerful affirmation when you feel a surge of emotional energy. The force of feeling jumpstarts you into action.

Now get some direct experience with “affirmation transformation.” Return to the first example mentioned in this article:

"I will quit smoking with ease and joy, remembering the effects on my physical and mental health and preparing to live a longer life."

Playing with the guidelines listed serves up some more exciting options, such as:

"I am breathing effortlessly with lungs that are pure and clean."

"I am celebrating how easily I breathe through strong, healthy lungs."

Also consider the following affirmations on a variety of topics:

"I am joyfully celebrating my graduation from college with a master’s degree."

"I am effectively delivering my first talk to an audience of over 1,000 people who affirm my message with a standing ovation."

"I am confidently checking the balance of my bank account as I make a deposit of $1,000,000."

"I am walking up on stage to receive my first Emmy award and receiving a roar of applause."

When you’re satisfied with the wording of your affirmation, start using it right away.

Repeat your affirmations at least three times daily—first thing in the morning, midday, and just before you go to sleep. Regular repetition will gently return your focus to manifesting the life of your dreams.

The Real Deal on Raising Money for Your Business

By Monique Hayward

According to the September 2009 American Express OPEN Small Business Monitor, 20 percent of business owners report experiencing difficulty accessing capital.

Even if you manage to get it, you discover that entrepreneurs and bankers have different perspectives on funding a business.

The entrepreneur works her plan to achieve profitability, takes huge risks, and sees success on the horizon. The banker, on the other hand, assesses today’s “Cs” – credit, cash flow, and collateral – and funds businesses with the least amount of risk to the bank, i.e., ones with lengthy, profitable track records. Service, retail, and restaurants, which tend to be heavily female and have a reputation for being tough, highly competitive, and prone to failure, tend to be unattractive from the start.

I believe this disconnect explains in large part why the vast majority of us don’t get money from banks. The Aug. 2009 Small Business Success Index notes that only about a third of businesses rely on traditional bank credit lines, one-fifth get bank loans, and about three percent receive SBA loans. And they usually require your personal guarantee should the business not be able to meet these obligations.

You have to be creative in getting the funding you need for your business. A few areas to consider:

What’s Your Skin in the Game?
According to a Nov. 2009 study by the Kauffman Foundation, the most significant source of funding for all businesses is the owners’ personal savings. Therefore, get your personal finances in order – clear debts, pay off bills, save money. There’s wisdom in that cliché, “Don’t quit your day job.” When revenues fall short, your paycheck fills in and gives you a leg up when you’re ready to seek outside financing. The credit lines I secured were approved because of my day job.

Friends and Family Are True “Angels”
With angel investors difficult to find and attract, your friends and family are your best bet. When I started my company, only one person who invested did not know me before I pitched him. The rest were business-minded friends and family who believed in my ability to succeed, understood the long-term return on their investment, and did not lie awake at night worried about their money.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Crisis never strikes at a cash-rich time, and bankers or angels aren’t coming to the rescue. Instead, you will dig deep into your own pockets and lean on your friends and family to stay in business. Have the “short list” of people you can call in a crunch, particularly other women. As self-empowerment expert Iyanla Vanzant says, “If you think back through your life and your deepest, darkest moments, it was another woman, an angel, who was there for you.”

Explore Financing Alternatives
Alternative financiers offer funding options for entrepreneurs where banks and investors are not. “People-to-people” lending sites, like Prosper Marketplace (, where community members bid on loan requests, are popular among business owners. After a simple application process and routine credit check, I posted my first request on Prosper for $10,000 for working capital, and in less than a day, I received enough bids to fund my loan and secured an interest rate comparable to my credit cards.

Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate
Finally, learn the art of negotiation with your vendors and creditors if you get into a tight spot. Most people will accept getting paid late over not getting paid at all. Set up payment plans and openly communicate with them about what’s happening when you hit a slow period or get hit with surprise expenses. You will find that most people, especially if they are small business owners, understand exactly what you’re going through.
