10 Fun Ways to Use Pinterest for Business

Pinterest is the latest Social Media kid on the block. It can be a little overwhelming but – as with any tool – I suggest you just jump in and start having fun. Pinterest is great for creatives because it’s a visual medium and encourages your followers to share and have fun.

Caution: As with any social media tool set a time limit that you’re going to give to exploring Pinterest.

Remember: Social Media is about creating relationships and being a leader. It is NOT a place to push sales messages or do advertising. Here are 10 ways to use Pinterest to get your community sharing:

1. Add a “Pin It’ button. On Pinterest’s Goodies page you can grab the code to put on your website, blog, articles, or even in your email signature. It makes it easy for people to share YOU.

2. Link to Twitter. Link you Pinterest profile to your Twitter account (FaceBook only links to personal profile pages at this time). Within Pinterest you can choose to use your Twitter photo or upload a new one. You can also add a location and website and a brief description of your services.

3. Play nice. Don’t spam others with your sales messages. Pin others’ valuable info and always give credit. Pinterest is about sharing, so connect with other like-minded people and become a recourse hub.

4. Use Pinterest as a Focus Group. Pin up ideas and ask opinions. Or you can follow your clients or desired clients; see what they like and use that as information to grow your services or products.

5. Paint a picture. Pinterest has theme-based pinboards such as Edible Celebrations, How Does Your Garden Grow, We’re Using to Reusing, etc, you can create Pin Boards to relate to a lifestyle that can be achieved by working with you.

6. Bookmark it. Pinterest has a “Pin It” bookmarklet lets you grab an image from any website and add it to one of your pinboards. When you pin from a website, Pinterest automatically grabs the source link to credit the original creator. You can find the bookmarklet on Pinterest’s goodies page.

7. Optimize it. When you create a new pin, be sure to use keywords and any relevant hash tags in your description so that it can be picked up by search engines.

8. Interact. Seek out others with similar interests or who share your target market. It’s about interacting and engaging with others. The more you share with others – the more you’re seen. Tip: It’s OK to share the personal side of yourself – just beware that it’s visible, so only share what you wouldn’t mind your mom seeing.

9. Comment. Comment on others Pin Boards. Be friendly and share.

10. Be a Hub. Collect info, images, articles, videos, whatever – that your target market will be interested in and pin them to relevant boards. This makes YOU the resource for your potential clients. Associating yourself with what they’re looking for makes you more credible as an expert.

11. Limit and monitor. Don’t spend more than 10 or 15 minutes on Pinterest – especially at first. Drop in to monitor what’s being shared. You can also monitor some of the activity from the FaceBook stream and engage there. This is a tool for visibility. Be sure it doesn’t become your JOB.

5 Simple Steps to Growing Your Business with Gratitude

Though we live in a modern, fast paced society, spend a lot of time communicating via text message, email and social media, and are extremely pressed for time, there is NO substitute for grace and expressing your appreciation in business. This is especially true when it comes to thanking those individuals who support your business efforts. To honor the relationship and encourage ongoing referrals it's important that you make the time to stay in touch with them and offer a heartfelt thank you.

One of the reasons it can be challenging to do this, despite the best of intentions, is because service professionals are usually not nearly as organized as they should be with their marketing efforts. So, if thanking someone who has referred business to you or otherwise extended a helping hand in growing your business is not on your radar, it's not likely that you'll follow-up as you need to.

In order to develop and maintain these potentially lucrative relationships, it's important that you have systems in place to stay in touch. Here are a few tips on how you can do just that:

    * Systematize your efforts: Send a monthly letter to your referral partners to let them know what’s new in your business. Share a quick tip, articles from your blog, highlight any new services you’re offering and let them know you’re available to help them and their network.

    * Be sure to promptly follow-up (within 48 hours) on ANY leads you receive. This will show off your professionalism and make it more likely for the new leads to hire you.

    * Promptly send a thank you gift to the referrer to express your appreciation. Your sign of gratitude will go a long way to make a big impression with the referrer and likely encourage them to send more business your way.

    * Spend at least 15 minutes each week referring business to someone else. You'll be seen as a Connector and will stay top of mind amongst your referral circle.

    * Create a Power Partner circle by connecting with complementary service professionals and meeting weekly (or monthly) with the specific purpose of referring leads to one another. Since you help the same target market in different ways, you’re not only helping each other but you’re helping your clients as well.

Don't leave nurturing your referral partnerships to chance. Give it your focus and attention!
It’s far too easy these days to forget about gratitude and kindness. You can set yourself apart from your colleagues by going the extra mile to stay in touch with your referral partners and showing your appreciation for the support they offer. You’ll see the difference as your business grows by leaps and bounds!

Entrepreneurial Success is All in the Preparation

There are many ways in which young, aspiring entrepreneurs take the plunge. All involve making drastic changes and the common goal shared by all is a strong desire to live the working life that they have been dreaming of.

My dream led me to a life of freelance writing. Yes! It is possible to live, eat and pay your bills comfortably as a freelance writer. I know because I am doing it right now.

There’s no one hard and fast rule for leaving behind a life of corporate slavery and making a success of things on your own. You simply need to know what you want, what you are willing to give up and you need to be prepared.

Preparation is the key to all huge life-changing decisions that bring us joy and happiness. Over-preparation is a clear indication of fear, but under-preparation is just plain sloppy. Entrepreneurs, even those with the most ground-breaking, innovative ideas in their pockets, need to be prepared.

1. Get Educated
Education comes in many forms. Options include anything and everything from courses that can be done online, full or part-time university courses, one-day seminars to week-long intensives. Entrepreneurs need to explore education and training opportunities in order to realize their dreams and, if applicable, successfully guide their teams in the future.

As a writer for online sites and magazines, I chose to attend a variety of seminars, intensive courses and online programs in SEO Content Development. The things I learned on these programs have been fundamental to my success. I also studied on a number of language courses abroad in Spanish, Portuguese and French. As I travel the globe looking for a story to sell to English speaking sites, it helps that I can communicate with the people that matter – the locals!

Entrepreneurs exist all across the globe. Throughout my travels, freelancing and writing, almost every foreign entrepreneur I have come across has studied English abroad.

Despite having belief in their innovative ideas, foreign entrepreneurs still recognize that without English many international doors are closed to them. They prepare well and English study is part of that preparation. The future of international business looks to change, however, and I would certainly encourage native English speakers to start placing more of an emphasis on learning a foreign language as soon as possible. In particular, I would focus on Spanish or perhaps even Brazilian Portuguese.

2. Find Experience
Most entrepreneurs have to go through a period of time where they invest time in realizing their dreams without earning anything. This might consist of working for free in the form of an internship in order to gain experience. It might also mean working full time and then working extra hours on your entrepreneurial project on top of your day job.

Either way, successful entrepreneurs come prepared, the experience they have is focused and detailed and nothing is left to chance. Experimenting or learning how to do something should not be risked with your startup idea. The time for this kind of risk should be something that you invest in when working on others projects that will eventually lead you onto your special big break.

3. Invest in and Strengthen your Talents
A huge mistake would be to try to start your own business that require talents you simply do not possess. It is really important to recognize who you are, what you’re good at and what you will never be able to pull off.

For example, I love learning. I never stop and I am good at it too. I take in new information very easily and I thrive on having to start something from the very beginning. I am also excellent and teaching myself new things. I don’t always need to have a teacher or a course outline driving me forwards. This is why I am so good at learning languages and this is why I have managed to build up my travel writing career so quickly.

I am able to write in foreign languages and I use my language skills to really investigate from the ground up, talking to locals and holding interviews in my sources’ native languages.

I am terrible at selling anything. I am a disaster when it comes to the telephone (in fact, I rarely answer my telephone and operate almost entirely via social networking chats, emails and text messages). This is why I decided not to focus too much on my own blog as a way of earning money. I would need to sell advertising space, drive traffic, get involved in Google Page Rank, etc. and I am just not interested in these things.

Therefore, I write for others, I get paid for doing so and I am happy with this arrangement. Know your strengths and play to them. This is very important.

4. Discover Tools and Ideas to Save Time and Money
There are lots of businesses which devote their time and energies to supporting entrepreneurs and there are lots of networks and communities for the soon-to-be-entrepreneur to join too, all of which can help save time and money for new start-ups and set them on the road towards success with fewer hiccups along the way.

One particularly useful resource for those entrepreneurs looking to make business links between the UK and the US is Love Home Swap. I use home swap all the time as a way of seeing the world in style and comfort (staying in someone’s house or apartment is so much more civilised and comfortable than renting a hotel room, particularly when staying for long periods of time). However, I also use the service for work purposes. I have found the site really useful when traveling to the US. Houseswapping can allow you to save thousands on hotel bills in the USA, literally thousands.

Keep your eyes and ears open for other kinds of services like Love Home Swap that can be of use to you as an entrepreneur locally, nationally and internationally as it is a market that’s growing fast and definitely one to watch.

Shift Your Energy to Jump Start Your Cash Flow!

Did you know that low cash flow is actually caused by low energy in your life? Most people think that they have to work harder in order to make more money however that is not normally the case.

When cash flow slows way down or stops it's usually for one of 3 reasons:

1. The Universe and your Guides are letting you know that it is time to change direction. Often times when we are being led toward bigger and better things, or things that will be in more alignment with our passion, our current cash flow stops. This is especially true if we have been ignoring our inner voice for a while or working at a job that really stresses us, out in fear, just for bills etc.

2. We are thinking more about how much money we need and lacing it with fear, than about what contribution we can be to others. One of the best questions you can ask yourself when you get up in the morning or throughout the day is "what contribution can I be that is the equivalent of (insert how much money you would like to make) in energy exchange." This acknowledges your willingness to contribute and receive reciprocal energy exchange in the form of cash, completing the cycle. 

3. We are using up our time focusing on heavy, stressful, low-energy topics and conversations that cause us to spend a lot of time spinning negative energy. My biggest advice to anyone who is going through tough times with money flow is to TURN OFF the NEWS!!! And focus your energy on positive things, physical activity, creative endeavors, going out in nature and whatever else makes you Feel Good.

When you focus on the hard news and all the doom and gloom stories of the day, and you feel your mood shift, whatever work you've done to create more cash flow in your life goes out the window because you've taken your energy so far down and like attracts like. I see it happen over and over again. We get very inspired with all kinds of great ideas and then we have a conversation with a negative person or listen to the horror stories of the day on the news and our energy drops.

Even if we're trying to ignore it, it's still the energy spinning in the wrong direction and your cash flow is directly related to your personal energy and what you focus on with emotion. There is just no way around that.

To keep up with what's going on in the world minimize your exposure to news programs that drone on and on about how horrible everything is. Read a digest on the internet or check the basic headlines in the paper and let go of excessive exposure which causes undue anxiety, stress, analysis, judgement, criticism... need I say more?

So what can you do energetically to turn things around?

1. Ask a Question: The best way to get answers from the Universe is to ask a question! Each morning, ask yourself questions like, "What contribution can I be today that will also generate cash flow?" or "What fun can I have today that will also make me money?" These are just a couple of examples, but you can come up with your own, that really resonate with you as well. You will be amazed when you invite the Universe to have a conversation with you instead of constantly declaring how bad things are or how worried you are. 

2. Take Action, Money May Come from Unexpected Sources: Generally, when you're in alignment, cash flow comes easily. I'm not saying that you don't have to work, but your efforts are rewarded pretty quickly, often it comes from an unexpected source and not necessarily from your direct efforts. So be open to receive from wherever the Universe wants to send it from!

3. Joy Generates Cash! Take time to play!: It is important to be organized, consistent and diligent in your efforts to create cash, however when you are having fun it is BY FAR the BEST energy to Generate more cash flow! When you are joyful, you are contributing to the greater energy of the Universe and the overall Group Consciousness. That reflects back to you as synchronicities, rich happy financial surprises, new sources of income and more sustainable cash flow!

Just trying a few of these tips should get things moving for you!! Give yourself a chance and let the flow begin!

Good or Bad, Habits Always Deliver Results

You are an accumulation of your habits. From how you get out of bed, how you shower, how you dress, how you walk, sit, and talk, how you respond to the world, how you act in front of others, and how you think; you're living out your habits.

Habits are necessary.

They free up your mind so you can concentrate on how to survive day to day. You don't have to think about how to drive your car so you can be on the lookout for danger while you are driving. You don't have to think about how to walk so you can concentrate on where you're going.

Unfortunately, habits can also keep you locked in self-destructive patterns, which will limit your success.

Is there something you want to accomplish in life that requires you to up-level your game? Whatever it is that you want to achieve, you will need to drop those bad habits that are lead to a dead-end and develop new ones that are in alignment with the life you want to live.

People don't suddenly appear in the life they want to live... their habits play a large part in determining their outcome.

What are the habits you have that are keeping you from achieving your goals?
Really be honest with yourself here...

Are you always running late?
Do you return phone calls within 24 hours?
Do you get enough sleep?
Do you follow through on your promises?
Do you plan out your day?

Imagine what your life would be like if all your habits were their productive counterparts!
  •     What would your life be like if you ate healthy meals, exercised and got enough sleep?
  •     What if you saved your money, stopped using credit cards and paid cash for everything?
  •     What if you stopped procrastinating, overcame your fears, and began networking with people in your field?
  •     Would your life be different? I bet it would!

So, my suggested action step for you is to write down some productive habits you could adopt and visualize in your life. Step two is to 'act as if' you were living these new habits right now!

I'd like to help you get moving toward creating more successful habits, so I'd recommend you develop four of your new success habits each year, one for each quarter.

Once you pick the new habit you're ready to adopt, next you'll want to create a method that will support your new habit.

Here are some ideas... You could write it down on a card that you keep with you and read several times a day. You could make it a part of your daily visualization. You could also enlist the help of an accountability partner who has habits to change, or work with a personal coach who can keep you on track.

It's important to make a 100% commitment to your new habit, so be specific about the steps that you're willing to take in order to drop an old habit and adopt a new one. Don't be vague about how you will change your habits. Spell it out for yourself so you can recognize situations that motivate you to act out your new habit.

Just developing four new habits a year will dramatically shift your life to be more in line with your vision. And the more in line it becomes, the easier the other habits are to replace because your perspective is shifting and you can see more clearly how your old habits aren't serving you anymore.

Make the decision. Make the commitment. Then watch your new, positive life unfold!

Social Media Sharing: 3 Questions to Ask Before You Post

The good and the bad about social media is that there aren’t any firm rules. You can choose how you want to use it, post whatever you want, connect — or not– with whomever you want. For example, some use LinkedIn to connect only with those they already know, and some use it to expand their network and are willing to accept invitations from anybody. Both approaches are totally valid and the best one for you depends on the goals of your business.

But, just because there aren’t any firm rules, doesn’t mean there aren’t some best practices you should be following. If your intention is to use social media to build your business, then focus on activities that advance your cause, and stop doing or minimize everything else. If you’re killing hours of time playing games or watching videos of kittens, and then complaining that social media takes too much time and doesn’t work for you, you should re-evaluate what you are doing.

And this lack of rules leaves some people a little lost. In every social media workshop I’ve attended, those who aren’t active yet say they haven’t jumped in because they really don’t want to post what they’ve had for breakfast that morning. And yes, if you feel compelled to post things like that, then please don’t bother. But there’s so much information that you could be sharing.

What you need to do is ask yourself these 3 questions:

1) What can I share to enhance my credibility? The majority of your posts should be intended to increase your reputation as an expert in your field. That means sharing articles and resources — your own and from others — that your followers would find helpful. It’s perfectly okay to share something personal every once in a while, that’s what adds dimension to your profile and helps people connect with you on other levels, especially if they share your same interest.

2) What can I share to help me stay in touch? Social media makes it easy to keep in touch with so many people in your network in just minutes a day. On Facebook, you can see which of your friends is having a birthday. On LinkedIn you can see who just got promoted or changed jobs. It takes just seconds to say “happy birthday” or “congratulations” or to “like” a post. It’s like tapping someone on the shoulder and saying “Hi, I noticed you today.”

3) What can I share that will help someone else? Again, it takes seconds to share a link or retweet a post on social media, which means that in seconds, you can help someone in your network spread their message. No matter how busy they may be, they’ll notice you in a very positive way because you’ve helped them. Every little touch point helps strengthen your relationship over the long term.

Hopefully this simple but powerful framework will help you become more visible and relevant in your industry and to the people in your network, and spark many more opportunities to advance your goals.

5 Top Reasons Why Women Start Businesses

They say, though less often than 30 years ago, that behind every successful man there stands a woman. What about successful women? In the 21st century, successful women entrepreneurs are quite common. What motivated them to start their own businesses in the first place?

According to research by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, women entrepreneurs are motivated by both psychological and financial factors. The top five motivating factors are:

  1. Wealth-building – The reason women entrepreneurs start their own companies is a desire to build wealth. This should come as no surprise, as most entrepreneurs are driven by a profit motive. Men, however, cited the desire to build wealth third on their lists, at 73 percent of men in the study compared to 76 percent of women. The ability of successful women to create wealth through their own businesses is a mark of woman’s progress in society in recent decades.
  2. A great business idea – 71 percent of the successful female entrepreneurs in the Kauffman foundation survey reported that they started a business because they had a great idea and wanted to capitalize on it. This motivation was almost as widespread as the desire to build wealth, cited by 77 percent of the population. This is a hallmark of the entrepreneurial mind. Entrepreneurs love ideas. They have a lot of ideas and they commit to making them happen.
  3. Start-up culture’s appeal – Following closely on the great idea is the appeal of start-up culture, mentioned by 68 percent of women. The energy and excitement of running a start-up and creating something from nothing are exciting to all entrepreneurs, but seems to be more important to men, 77% of whom cited it as important, very important or extremely important in the Kauffman Foundation study.
  4. Desire to own a company – More women in the survey, at 70 percent, than men, at 65 percent, have always wanted to start their own company. This is an interesting idea to ponder. Little girls used to dream of their wedding day. While that is still an important part of any woman’s life, it seems that girls now also dream of becoming successful entrepreneurs.
  5. Dissatisfaction with job – Many people think that a large majority of entrepreneurs fall into running a company because they can’t find traditional employment. This is actually not true, as five percent of both men and women in the Kauffman survey cited inability to find a job as their motivation. The truth is that most entrepreneurs do not want to work for someone else. 70 percent of women and 60 percent of men stated that this was important to them in becoming entrepreneurs.
Looking at the reasons that successful entrepreneurs chose to start a business, it becomes clear that women have similar motivations to men in starting a business. However, the importance of each of those motivations differs between successful female and male entrepreneurs.

The Purpose-Driven Business: 5 Simple Truths about Making Money from Your Calling

As an entrepreneur, if you live in this disempowered state-of-mind, you’ll never succeed. You must see money in a bigger way and invest in your growth and education.

2 – Clarity Trumps Practicality
One of the most common questions I get from clients is this: “Do you think my idea is practical, given this crazy economy?”

My answer is based on years of experience. You must decide to do it first, and then you can look at the practical aspects of it. That is the power of your commitment and your energy. (“Practical” is often a procrastination device!)

Clarity trumps practicality. When someone is clear, and they take action from that place of clarity – then practicality has no choice but to move aside and let manifestation occur.

3 – Systems Help You Soar
If you are creative or entrepreneurial, you are probably great at “winging it.” The only problem is that you often live in chaos, and everything on your to-do list is urgent. Keep this up – and you’ll eventually burn out.

Systems require that you step back and really look at your daily activities. Systems require that you ask: “How does this work? How can I make it more effective?” Systems allow you to step away from your work, take vacations, have weekends – and most blessedly, have lots of free space in your mind for creativity. When I help my clients set up even simple systems for the first time in their businesses, they are always amazed at how much more time they have.

4 – Ignoring your Marketing Doesn’t Make You Humble. (It makes you fail.)

I was a big fan of the statement: “Do what you love, and the money will follow.” It’s a beautiful philosophy. And true on so many levels. But I used it as a way to ignore the business side of my work. After all, hey, if I’m aligned with my purpose, the money will follow – then I don’t ever have to deal with it, right?

Uh, wrong.

I’ve since learned that avoidance is not a game plan. Neither is hope. Just because you’re a little scared to market yourself doesn’t mean you can’t do it!

When you learn how to consciously market your products and services and offer packages and programs in alignment with your purpose – you will experience a deep peace because you will understand how to run your business and marketing so that it supports your purpose. (That’s what your business is supposed to do!)

5 – Serve. Or Be a Servant. The Choice is Yours.

You serve others with your attention, your intention, your health, your clarity, your awareness, and your power.

You serve others by charging what you’re worth, taking care of your health, honoring your time so that you’re not distracted or multi-tasking, by making requests rather than complaining, and by taking full responsibility for your thoughts and actions.

When you’re a servant, however, you’re a slave to the ego, which wants you to believe that serving others means ignoring yourself. After all, the ego would prefer that you remain powerless, fearful, and unaware. That way, it keeps you tethered to the idea of “security.”

When you don’t understand power (or service), you need security for survival. The ego is great at security.

3 Ways to Become an Admired Leader

When you’re in a position of power, whether as a co-founder of a start-up or a CEO, is it possible to foster a healthy and inspiring relationship with other people?

The truth is, none of us are perfect, but there are a few behaviors that naturally make people feel more comfortable and appreciated. As business leaders, we are always reflecting an opinion of worth as we assess the value of our product, employees and peers. We are also pressed for time and working under extreme pressure, which can make it hard to focus on others and their feelings.

Mastering our communication as business leaders is the first step to building healthy relationships with those around us; and it makes a world of difference when building a company and an internal culture.

Let people know you are paying attention.

As the business leader, you may feel the urge to squeeze your vision and opinion into every conversation, but this can overwhelm other members of the team. Each business needs people who have the freedom to think creatively and openly with room for mistakes.

When you are in a position of power and you deny your employees the power of self-expression, you stifle productivity and morale. Allow your employees a space to share opinions and ideas. There are many different ways to encourage self-expression so think beyond meetings or conference calls.

When you are one-on-one with someone else or when someone else has the floor, remember that listening is an active process. Ask questions and maintain eye contact. Do not let your phone or computer distract you. Save your questions until the speaker has finished his or her thought. Write notes if necessary and do not dismiss or distract the speaker with an interruption.

Good leaders are good listeners because they understand that each person on the team has something valuable to contribute. As a leader, it is your job to identify the strengths of others and how it will advance your business. Every single person knows something you don’t and is more talented than you are in some way.

Be selective about your communication

While your employees are allowed to brainstorm freely, make mistakes and wander into uncharted territory – your communication must be pared down, pointed and clear. During brainstorming sessions, you should only contribute when you have something definitive to say.

Your own brainstorming sessions should be held within a trusted think tank, and while you may have more room for speculation, you should enter the session fully aware of the challenges you are hoping to solve.

Speaking before you have formed a clear opinion could make you seem unreliable if you are forced to change your opinion after more research. It can also lead to disappointment or wasted investment from your employees. Always choose your words carefully.

As a great listener, your attention truly is a gift. This means that you must be very selective about the amount of time you spend listening to others. Take the initiative to provide your employees with many different avenues for expression while managing your own time and priorities in regard to receiving input.

Take responsibility for failings and give credit for success.

You’re the captain of this boat, and as a captain, getting to shore is part of the job. Managing the boat when the seas are rough is also part of the job. Though you don’t do either alone, it is important to credit others for success and recognize your own faults when dealing with failures.

It seems like a simple piece of advice, but the human ego can often jump in the way of actually adhering to it. The first impulse in a crisis is to take the “heads will roll” approach. This is very seldom the necessary solution, and passing blame is more often a way to distract yourself from your own shortcomings.

Though humility is an admirable quality to display, it also has a tactical element. Each time you hold yourself accountable for a mistake, you will be better prepared to avoid mistakes or navigate a similar crisis in the future. Taking credit for failures simply makes you a better leader because it makes you aware of your opportunities to grow.
