Author Q&A: GOING SOCIAL by Jeremy Goldman

Jeremy Goldman is the author of Going Social: Excite Customers, Generate Buzz, and Energize Your Brand with the Power of Social Media (AMACOM; November 2012). He has been working with companies looking to take their operations online and inject “social” into their processes for over a decade.

Having started an online direct marketing agency (WJER), Jeremy has more recently managed global Ecommerce and social media for a number of global beauty brands, including Jurlique, Kiehl’s, and TEMPTU, and consulted with countless others, including Dove, Ouidad, Ahava, and TIGI Haircare. He is currently AVP of Interactive and Communications for iluminage Inc., a Unilever subsidiary that is the multinational’s first foray into luxury personal care.

Jeremy earned his MBA in Information Systems and Marketing at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business (second only to MIT in that combined degree) and is a recognized marketing and social media expert.

Jeremy is stopping by the blog to share insights from his new book, and give tips that entrepreneurs can apply to their businesses.

Deb Bailey: What gave you the idea to write Going Social?

Jeremy Goldman: I would often have friends of mine ask me questions like, "what's the best way to start developing a Twitter following?" or "what should I be thinking about before I set up my Facebook Page?." I was getting so many questions like these I finally just figured I would write a short guidebook that would answer a bunch of these questions and more. Needless to say, I kept writing and writing and eventually, I had a nearly 300 page book on my hands - and that's how Going Social came about!

Deb: So your book will show us how to use social media?

Jeremy: Going Social is all about how to take social media and build it into all of your existing business processes so that your company has a better chance of succeeding in a difficult business climate. Let's face it: in such a short period of time, social media has become so critical for brands trying to put their products in front of consumers. Going Social explains the ins and outs of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, blogging, and much more.

Deb: Who do you think will benefit most from reading it?

Jeremy: I wrote Going Social with the goal of positioning it so that it would be able to help both junior employees who are doing the front-line social media engagement on a daily basis for companies, as well as senior executives who have to think strategically about how social marketing fits into their overall business objectives. You definitely don't have to be a social media in genius in order to get a lot of value out of the book.

Deb: There are a lot of books out there about social media. What would you say makes Going Social different from the others?

Jeremy: Unlike the authors of some books covering social media engagement, I've been the strategist on the brand side, and I've often been simultaneously responsible for direct customer engagement. I've also managed my brands' Ecommerce presence and often, the customer service and online PR functions as well. As a result, I have a cross-functional understanding of how these departments work and how they should work on social channels, and I can share with my readers actual lessons learned from the social marketing frontlines. Due to my diverse set of experiences, I can look at these functions holistically, as opposed to merely seeing individual business units operating in silos.

While I knew my own experiences would be beneficial to my readers, I realized readers could also benefit from the experience of those in my circle, including entrepreneurs, community managers, bloggers, social media directors of larger businesses, and human behavior experts. In this way I'm able to share a diverse set of experiences with my readers, giving them greater insight into how they can grow their own presences on social channels.

Deb: What do you want readers to come away with after they've read Going Social?

Jeremy: That's a tough question; there is so much that I want people to be able to take away from Going Social! From formulating a social strategy and tying it back to business objectives to how to give your brand a unique voice and personality, from how to create relevant, engaging content to identifying and rewarding influencers, from avoiding pitfalls to responding to negative criticism, we definitely cover a lot of ground.

Deb: There are so many women starting businesses. What's your best advice for a woman entrepreneur who is uncertain of her next steps?

Jeremy: The best advice is probably did not try to do everything. There's so much out there for a woman entrepreneur to try to master when it comes to social media, it's probably a good idea to wade into the waters and to get good at a few things before you try to really jump into everything at more or less the same time. Don't be afraid to experiment, and don't be afraid to follow your gut. I try not to tell people that there are ten immutable laws of social media marketing or anything like that, because while there might be guidelines, but there aren't really rules. You know your own customers better than any book, which is why I tried to deliver a framework for thinking about social media marketing that the reader can then apply towards her business.

Deb: One last question for you - what inspires you to do the work you do?

Jeremy: I've seen some really great brands fail, and I've seen some brands that really weren't all that impressive succeed. The business world isn't always fair. However, if you have a strong social media game plan, you've got a much better chance to succeed then if you are lacking one.  I just love the fact that my work gives really great brands a better chance to resonate with their audiences.

Deb: Thanks so much for stopping by, Jeremy! Where can people find your book and where they can find you on social media?

Jeremy: The book can be found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and wherever great business books are sold.

You Gotta Get Good At Discovery Sessions, Here’s How

by Kendall SummerHawk

No matter what it is you’re launching — private clients, VIP Days, group programs, workshops, even teleseminars and info products — getting your ideal clients engaged on the phone with you in a Discovery session is a must have part of your client attraction sequence.

And no matter how new or experienced you are today at delivering discovery sessions, there’s always room for improvement.

For example, if you’re just getting started in your business your goal can be to "convert" 50% (or more) of your calls into paying clients and to focus on filling your calendar with a minimum of 10 discovery sessions per week.

If you’re more experienced and already getting a higher conversion rate, say even 90 – 100%, then challenge yourself by raising your fees or adding a team member on to sell for you.

Keep in mind that the goal in a discovery call is to transform ideal candidates into paying clients, so it’s important to understand that this call isn’t just a friendly chat and it’s not "free coaching".

The key part of any discovery call is to make an offer. But what happens if you freeze when it comes time to offer your services?

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to transform you discovery sessions into paying clients, using a simple coaching technique called “preframing". You don’t have to be a coach to use preframing, and using it will help you substantially increase the number of people who say "Yes" to your offer.

Here are 3 simple tips on how to use preframing to increase your discovery session success rate.

Tip #1 – Respectfully and Confidently Take Charge of the Call

Start by giving your prospective client a brief description of what’s going to happen for them. For example, you can say:

“We have about 30 minutes together and in this time we’re going to discover in-depth what your current situation is and what the best direction is for you to head in. And then we’ll see if there’s a fit for how I can help you solve your situation so you can get what you want.”

By setting yourself up as the leader of the conversation you give yourself a powerful place from which to make an offer.

Tip #2 – Load Up Their Problem with Possibilities

While you don’t want to shy away from digging deeply into your prospective client’s challenges, if you let them go into a "well of despair" they won’t believe they can get what they want when you finally make your offer.

Instead, keep listening for what’s possible for them while they are sharing what they’re stuck on. I like to make a list of what their challenges are, and what the opportunities are for them once the challenges are solved.

Giving them a summary during the call (starting with the challenges first) immediately installs value because your prospective client is seeing for themselves what is at stake in staying stuck…and how much they can achieve by taking action. This creates awesome anticipation and energy for them to want to say yes to you!

Tip #3 – Convert Their "Pain" Into A Tangible Number

Even if you offer softer services, your prospective client’s struggling is likely costing them money or preventing them from making money in some way. By linking their pain with tangible numbers you’ll help them see the financial value in working with you. Show them this connection and you’ll automatically increase your success rate in your discovery sessions.

Your voice is one of your biggest assets. It informs others. It expresses desire, hope, fear, happiness, sadness and other emotions. More importantly, it tells people who you are and what you want.

When an individual speaks up, things change. This is universal. This is how change happens. When we open up our great big beautiful mouths and start speaking to others, change occurs for us and for all those whose lives we touch – whether it’s your daughter, neighbor, business colleague, friend, intimate partner or even a stranger you meet for a moment and then may never see again.

It’s time for women everywhere to get their voice on — whether it’s in the corporate world, the non-profit sector, as a small business owner or brand new entrepreneur with a great idea, or as mom who wants to break back in to the adult world to do something great.

Teenagers are discovering the world around them and who they are. They fear speaking up in an environment where they are often not in a position of authority. What would change if they spoke up about what they saw and what they wanted? What could change if this dialogue occurred? What could they create in the world to make it a better place locally and globally?

Martin Luther King Day - A Day of Service

"All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a vital figure of the modern era and a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement. His lectures and dialogues stirred the concern and sparked the conscience of a generation. His charismatic leadership inspired men and women, young and old, in this nation and around the world.

After a long struggle, legislation was signed in 1983 creating a federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." It's part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

The Corporation for National & Community Service leads the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a National Day of Service. This year's commemoration coincides with the 57th Presidential Inauguration, which includes a National Day of Service on January 19. - from

Why There's No "American Idol" for Authors

by Deborah A Bailey

Have you ever watched "American Idol," or the "X Factor," or any show where contestants compete to win the big prize?

I remember watching American Idol with a friend and she was rooting for her favorite singer to win.

We got caught up in the drama and the suspense of it - would the singer win or lose her big chance?

She worked so hard for the spotlight, what would happen if she didn't make it?

Why do you want to write a book? Is it a deep desire or just a "nice to have?" Are you hoping to promote your business, or tell your personal story?

The great thing is that you aren't competing with anyone else to tell your story. That applies even if you're writing a book to promote your business. Your business might have competitors, but your book won't.

Because no one can tell the story like you can. No one else can have the same life experiences or point of view, no matter how similar your businesses are. Even if your dream is to write a novel or memoir, no one else's story will ever be exactly the same as yours.

And you know what else? Readers want great, well-written stories, ideas that they can learn from or that help them to stretch beyond their everyday thinking. When I read your book, I'm getting your perspective and (hopefully) I'm learning something about myself as well.

Even when it comes to marketing - you are not competing. Really. If your marketing is truly reflecting your story and your brand - you won't look or sound like anyone else. (And that's the catch - you have to publish a book that's as real and authentic as you are  - instead of being a copy of what everyone else is doing.)

So what do you need to get started? An idea, a plan and persistence.

Your big book idea describes what you want to say, your plan (or outline) will give you the roadmap on how to say it and persistence will get you through the process. It's not about competing to be chosen as "the one." It's about stepping up and believing that your idea is worth sharing.

Bailey is author of two non-fiction books including, “Think Like an Entrepreneur: Transforming Your Career and Taking Charge of Your Life.” She's also the creator and host of Women Entrepreneurs Radio, a weekly podcast for women entrepreneurs. Be Empowered: How to Fight Back Against Emotional and Physical Abuse

by Leah Oviedo

We are taught skills to continue our education, to start a business, and raise a family, but women especially are not taught how to defend themselves from emotional or physical abuse. Just look at the high incidence of violence against women, teen suicides, domestic violence, rape, and muggings to see how little we are taught about fighting back.

As a certified self defense instructor with a background in the areas of domestic violence and sexual assault my dream is to share with everyone the skills to be self sufficient. To get the word out, I wrote a book that could be read for free online.

As a former victim of emotional violence, I know firsthand how important it is to learn skills to fight back. I was raised with strong female role models and encouraged to be strong, but never taught skills to do so. This book is intended for women and girls over the age of 13. You can read my book "You Can Fight Back: Emotional and Physical Self Defense" and order soft cover copies through

The book teaches the skills we need to be our own bodyguards by learning how to follow our intuition and be aware of warning signs. There are exercises to practice the healthiest forms of communication, confrontation, and problem solving. For more dangerous situations step by step physical self defense moves are accompanied by illustrations. These are defense moves that I have used to protect my own life.

The main goal of the book however is to encourage women and girls how to solve problems and stay away from violence by taking actions and using words that keep them safe. Just because females are often not as strong as males, we still have the capabilities to fight back and win! Sometimes domestic violence and sexual assault can only be stopped by the assailant, but prevention can be practiced by anyone.  Resources are included for victims of violence because sometimes no matter how prepared we are, we can still be hurt.

One thing I want readers to take away from this book is that nobody should ever feel like they deserve or were asking for violence. Violence is an act that is chosen by the person who commits it and never chosen by the victim. If you have been through violence you can choose to be a survivor by learning as much as you can about your rights and helping others who have been in similar situations. Remember that you deserve to be treated with respect. Don’t put up with anyone who treats you badly.

Leah Oviedo is a self defense instructor, author and artist. Her books include "Fierce: A New Generation of Female Empowerment", "I Am More Than Just a Girl" and "Word Art and Affirmations". Her background includes work in areas of foster care, domestic violence, sexual assault, business management, and art. Individual empowerment is a recurring theme in her work. After working in various fields she realized that she could make a positive difference by teaching prevention and educating people on how to make positive life choices. Learn more at

Accessing Your Authentic Message – Part 3

by Christine Kloser

It seems in nearly every conversation I’ve had lately - whether it’s with a client, friend, or colleague – the subject of authenticity keeps coming up.  So, in light of some of my recent conversations I have another installment for this series on accessing your authentic message.

While you likely know me as someone who is gentle, loving, compassionate, supportive, and understanding, I can feel my heart rate elevating with every word I write – so forgive me in advance if my message is “stronger” than usual.

The thing I want to share with you today is about the importance of not giving a damn what other people think!

In a world bombarded with messages from every angle about what “success” looks like, it can be challenging to forget about everyone and everything else and truly listen to what’s emerging inside of you.  I know, because I’ve been there.

As much as I thought I was marching to the beat of my own drum and doing what felt right in my own heart, it was only 20/20 hindsight that helped me see that I, too, was being influenced by what I thought I “should” be doing to be “successful” according to somebody else’s measure.

Ya know what?  For as long as I tried to “succeed” based on some external measure of what that was supposed to be - the more stressed I was, the more unhappy I was, the less I nurtured myself, and the more diligently I worked to try to keep the proverbial hamster wheel going.

Yet, like any hamster in a wheel, I worked and worked and worked, but really didn’t get anywhere.  All that work didn’t make me any happier.

Then after losing everything and finding tremendous JOY within myself (and a total lack of any desire to do anything to “please” anyone), the floodgates of creativity, authentic expression, service and abundance opened beyond my wildest dream.

One of the most liberating things I did after living from “I don’t care what other people think,” was to disregard the advice some of my most successful marketing friends told me.  They all said I’d never have any success with a program named Transformational Author Experience.  (They gave the name a big thumbs down, and rated it about 3 on scale of 1 to 10 – with 10 being the best.)

Trusting my intuition and giving voice to my authentic message which WAS the Transformational Author Experience, I launched a movement that has now served more than 20,000 authors around the world, and grossed more than $100,000 in the first 90 days it went live.

Please understand that I share these numbers with you not to boast about the success I had, but to show you what’s possible for YOU when you let the true you shine and share YOUR authentic message… without giving a damn what other people think.

Did it take a tremendous amount of work?  Yes.  Did I leverage nearly every relationship I had built – some for more than a decade?  Yes.  Did I get out of my comfort zone and take risks asking for lots of help?  Yes.  Did I pray every day that God would guide me and help me serve the authors who needed what I was offering?  Yes.   Did I work long days (and long nights) on a shoestring budget to make sure everything was coming together as it should?  Yes.

I share this to show you that living your authentic message and birthing it in the world is not an “easy breezy” task.  Living according to your heart, going against the norm, and putting yourself out there in a non-traditional way, or a way that doesn’t model the “right” marketing system is not for the faint of heart.

Though I assure you that if you’re willing to access your authentic message, not give a damn what others think, and do what your heart is calling you to do… you WILL have a thrilling ride and most likely end up somewhere far better than what you could have dreamed possible had you tried to fit into somebody else’s “box.”

Be who you are.  Let your light shine.  Do what feels right in your heart.  Trust your intuition… and enjoy the incredible journey of accessing your authentic message; because the person to give a damn about is… YOU!

How to Make Your 2013 Remarkable

by Diana Long

With a brand new year suddenly upon us, many of us will be looking ahead, perhaps setting New Year's Resolutions or jotting down a few goals we'd like to accomplish.

The million dollar question is will we really achieve our  goals or not? According to the ancient Mayans, we've just ended a 26,500 year cycle  in time.

Talk about new beginnings...2013 really is the year for a fresh start!

One of the reasons that we don't achieve our goals is  our target goals simply aren't exciting enough to capture our attention and motivate us take action over the long haul. Our goals just are not  potent enough. They lack energy, pizazz and the  thrill of an "impossible" challenge.

Instead of relying on the habit of  rehashing your lukewarm ,lackluster worn out goals and resolutions from past years and declaring these tired "should" goals as what you will aim for in 2013, why not do it differently this year?

Do any of these goals sound familiar?

I'm going to get fit this year.

I am going to lose weight this year.

I want to make more money this year.

I want to find my soul mate.

Let's be truthful, none of these goals has any "juice". I dare you to drop the boring, stand-by goals that you've been adding to your list of to-do's every year and step out and set some goals that are powerful and meaningful.

Why not set some goals that scare you a little bit ( or a lot!)  Choose to declare goals that are audacious, exciting and important to you. This is your life. What are you waiting for?

Here's where to start:

1. Self-reflection
- Carve out quiet time for you in the next week so you can let yourself dream again. With pen and paper handy, write down the different areas of your life to help you to identify some of the goals you have. Most of us create goals in these main areas of life:  health, money, work, relationships, community, fun and adventure +  spirituality.  Jot down ideas that come to you. Don't edit yourself or try talk yourself out of a goal.

2. Brainstorm
- Here's even more fun... be playful and bold with the ideas that you are generating for each of the areas in your life. Tell the truth. The real truth. What do you really want to experience? To do?  To be. To have in 2013?

3. Decide - Now it's time to craft your blueprint for 2013. What are the goals that get your blood flowing, your heart racing and uplift your energy?

If you previous wishy-washy goal was to get fit...this year's version might be: I will compete in a tango contest and do whatever it takes to make this happen!

Want to give back to your community and make a difference? Maybe this year's goal is to spearhead a cause that is near and dear to your heart because of a loved one's personal challenge.  Maybe you decide to establish your own foundation?

If you want to make more money in your business - why not decide to become a leader in your industry? (This goal has a completely different set of strategies associated with it than increasing your bottom line by 10 percent!)

Life is good for you, but not very exciting or full of adventure?  Decide to set a goal that knocks your socks off. Perhaps this is the year you spend a week, a month or (gasp, more!) in Paris, Auckland or Dominica? Climb Kilimanjaro? Meditate in a Monastery?

Choose goals that will push you to your edge, challenge you and bring out your best. I like to call these "soul" goals in contrast to the "grim" goals we often chain ourselves to.

Fair warning...these blockbuster goals will make you sweat, perhaps feel self doubt and or  trigger your inner critic's nagging voice which says things like: "you can't do this!" "you don't have enough time" "you don't know how" "this is too big," "outlandish" or it's "impossible."

Take a deep breath- soothe your inner critic by acknowledging your feelings, and then give yourself the permission to live your life to it's fullest starting right now.

Get busy designing your plans ( and take an action right away)

I love this inspirational quote, "if you shoot for the moon, you'll land among the stars" It speaks to all of us especially at the beginning of a new year.

The  time for all of us is now....

Here's to a truly remarkable year for you  in 2013. Choose it for you. Doing so will change your life and benefit  countless others, too.

Your Big Ol' But

by Doreen Rainey

A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with someone who shared the big goals they were working on. They excitedly went on and on about all that they were going to do and what life would be like once they were accomplished.

As they got more animated and enthusiastic about the direction they were headed, I found myself getting just as pumped up and inspired as they were by hearing them lay out what was to come.

Then I realized something. This conversation sounded very familiar. Like I'd had it before...with this same person!

Then it hit me! We'd actually had a conversation similar to this quite a while ago and I quickly saw that they had made little progress towards achieving them.

When I gently pointed this out, they acknowledged their slow progress but quickly offered a reason. Hearing it, I offered what I thought was a pretty good solution to what they just said. They nodded in agreement and then said, "Yea...but..."

Hearing them out, I empathized with them, however, saw a way for them to work through it. When I shared a new approach they could take with the situation, they nodded in agreement and then said, "Yea...but".

This went on for another 2 rounds of their excuses, my solutions and the inevitable "yea...but".

Finally, I ended the conversation and wished them the best, simply stating, "Your but is too big for me"!

Have you experienced this before? Maybe a friend or family member has come to you and asked for advice. They seem genuine in their request and are attentive to your response, indicating that they are ready to take decisive action on whatever you recommend. And happens.

Their big but gets in the way.

Or, maybe you are the one with the big but! Have you ever said the following:

But...I don't know how.

But...I don't have any support. don't know MY situation.

But...I don't have enough time.

But...I have too many other things to do.'s too hard.

But...I don't know where to start.

If you've ever explored working with a coach, you may have been told that coaches want to work with people who are "ready". What does ready mean? It means you are ready to retire your big ol' but!

It means that instead of looking immediately at the obstacles that come with getting what you want, you focus on the possibilities. It means that instead of seeing the challenges, you see the solutions.

I say retire your "big but" and replace it with a new mantra: "how can I make it happen".

When you turn your attention to proactive steps you can take to overcome your challenges, you realize your but isn't so big after all.
