How She Does It: Dawn Jones, Founder of PRESSED PR

Dawn Jones
Dawn Jones founded PRESSED PR in 2017 as a passion project that would empower other independent artists to succeed. As a musician herself with experience performing, touring, recording, and writing music, Dawn learned that intentional and personal public relations take you far in the music industry.

She wanted to develop a modern company that embodied the essence of intentional, personal, and innovative marketing with a team that displayed the strongest work ethic for their artists... thus PRESSED PR was born. Pressed PR exclusively represents independent artists with a fresh approach to promotional and branding services that empower them to share their music with more.

Deb Bailey: Welcome to the Secrets of Success blog, Dawn. Let's get started. :) What was the process for you to go into entrepreneurship?

Dawn Jones: I got started as an entrepreneur a month after I graduated from college. I was moving to a new place that didn't have the job opportunities in the music industry that I had been hoping for and so I decided to create my own job. Pressed PR was born out of necessity and opportunity, but quickly evolved into a passion and dream that I began chasing.

Deb: That's terrific. You knew what you wanted and went for it. Do you have any “lessons learned” that you’d like to share?

Dawn: The two biggest things I've learned thus far are:

- Don't be afraid to ask for what you want. Asking shows you are taking the initiative to make it happen and knocking on those doors of opportunity. I've been surprised many times when the answer has been "yes" even though I thought it was a long shot. Asking for opportunity shows others you have the hunger to work hard at it.

- Don't be afraid to hear the word "no" Trust me, as an entrepreneur (Especially starting out) you'll hear it A LOT.

Deb: Great advice. How would you describe your ideal clients?

Dawn: I want to work with clients who are driven, highly involved in working on furthering their music, prompt, and easy to communicate with. It makes my job so much more effective when I have a client who is willing to take an active role in their promotions in addition to my PR services. After all, PR only works when the client is utilizing the tools and resources effectively on their own as well.

Deb: What inspires you to do the work you do?

Dawn: When I get to see clients grow in their fanbase or play bigger shows than they previously have I get really excited about the work we are doing. The artists that we are working with are hustling hard for opportunities in the music industry and it feels really good when we are able to help them open up some of those doors.

Deb: What’s your vision for PRESSED PR?

Dawn: I want to see PRESSED PR grow to be more than a service for artists, but a place of resources and support for the independent music industry. There is so much amazing talent out there and I really want to be an active part of the culture that supports independent music in a variety of ways.

Deb: You jumped right in and followed your dream. What advice would you give to other women entrepreneurs who are just starting out?

Dawn: Go for it! Take the plunge, believe in yourself, surround yourself with an awesome support team, and be ready to ride a roller coaster of ups and downs. It takes a lot of hard work and unpaid hours to turn something from an idea into reality but if you are passionate about what you are doing it will make the work with

Deb: As you know, entrepreneurs are always busy juggling a lot of things. What is your favorite activity to relax and unwind?

Dawn: I enjoy playing music myself (Fiddle), hiking, rock climbing, and anything outdoors with my husband. We also make it a point to schedule travels here and there because it allows me to get away from the daily routine a little bit and prevents burn out.

Deb: Thanks so much for stopping by, Dawn. Enjoyed hearing about your business! Please share your website and social media URLs.

Dawn: I enjoyed it too, Deb. Here's my information.
