As Walker's great-great-granddaughter and as president of the Madam Walker Family Archives (the largest private collection of Walker photos, business records, personal correspondence, clothing and artifacts), it is a joy for me to share her story with others. Today our family proudly celebrates the legacy of the Walker women through our archives, books, speeches and the Madam Walker Theatre Center (a National Historic Landmark). We'd love for you and your readers to visit our websites.
A'Lelia Bundles
www.aleliabundles.com
www.walkertheatre.com
www.madamcjwalker.com
www.madamwalkerfamilyarchives.wordpress.comA'Leliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05308356336629593804noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-517245426025349354.post-29180246815963412192011-08-07T00:26:45.538-04:002011-08-07T00:26:45.538-04:00Angela, Thanks for updating us about Madame C.J. I would like to add Josephine Baker if that's OK.

Born in 1906 into the poverty of St. Louis, Josephine Baker was a remarkable woman and entertainer. I have just finished reading 'The Josephine Baker Story' by Ean Wood which chronicles her incredible life.

She began her singing and dancing cabaret shows in America, but moved to Paris after experiencing racial intolerance. There she starred in the Folies Bergeres, and also toured extensively.

During World War II she worked as an undercover agent and was awarded the Legion d'Honneur, the highest decoration in France.

Always a leader for civil rights, she adopted twelve children of all colours and creeds, her 'rainbow' children.

Late in life she experienced financial difficulties, and was evicted from her french chateau, but then rescued by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco.

She died in 1975 after having become famous again, performing at such venues as the London Palladium and Carnegie Hall.

A legend in her own time.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
